When life feels too, you know, full…

What if we cared for our minds like our bodies?

Hi Reader,

This week has been a big one. Honestly, it’s been like that for a while now. Hovering on the edge of burnout and just holding on. Maybe you’ve felt that too? Many of us, especially creative folk, take on far more than we can manage. We push through until something gives.

If this were physical health, we’d notice the signs and feel justified in resting. But with mental health, society tells us to keep going, to stay busy, to “manage better”. We rarely give ourselves the same compassion or allow ourselves the same recovery time for anxiety or stress-induced pain.

That bias is something worth challenging. It is something I realised just this week as I judged my own capacity when my anxiety was high.

For me, the reset comes through play. Not grand, time-consuming art projects, but small, simple moments. Like the smearing of paint on a page of scrap paper, making random marks, noticing something in the distance that I hadn't seen before or drawing letters with a pencil, this allows creativity to move in and through me without expectation. These little practices remind me I’m capable, they soften the pressure of “busy”, and they bring me back into myself.

Permission to Play was born from this need to have spaces to create and play that were safe and welcoming, but that also acknowledge the difficulty that comes with making time to create, despite the desire. If you have been feeling this pull and this “busy-ness” then I invite you to come and unpack this weekend in our PTP session. It’s live and online (pjs welcome), and you show up exactly as you are.

If you’ve been feeling stretched thin, this is your reminder: busy isn’t the goal. Presence, play, and kindness are. I hope you’ll join me.

Until soon.

Follow the sun... Reader, do you ever notice how, when a new month begins on the same day a season changes, there’s a different energy in the air? Perhaps it’s the nature of newness, the possibility of beginning again, or simply the gentle reminder that this is an opportunity to finally do one thing you’ve been putting off. Here in Australia, we’re moving into spring. I have a love/hate relationship with spring: I love the blooms, the sun warming the back of my neck, the way flowers pop up...

I recently splurged on a new brush pen Reader. If you have been following along for a while, you will know that I used to have #allthepens before I moved to focus on found and handmade tools. I love nothing more than creating unique and random tools out of found objects and materials. Recent things I have written and made marks with include: - Aluminium cans - Sticks - Leaves - Toilet rolls - Pegs - Toy dinosaurs - Packaging foam - Nerf bullet (sorry kids) - Bamboo - Sting - Rocks - Spoons -...
